“PRAYER”

BY KAY DILLS

James 5:16

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.  The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

I was struggling with what to write for my devotion this month.  I had some ideas but the words would not come.  I prayed that God would help me fine the words He wanted me to write.  As I was driving down the road this morning I passed a sign that read:  “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?”  That’s it I shouted!  God wanted me to write about prayer.

As I thought about the sign I had read, my thoughts went in all directions.  My first thought was a girl I knew in college who was a proclaimed atheist.  Not long ago I saw on Facebook that she was asking for prayers.  I wondered to myself “whom exactly do you want me to pray to?”  You see her God and my God were not the same.  Her God was like a spare tire.  Something had happened that for the first time in her life she needed God.  She had a flat tire, so she pulled out her spare tire.  God had become real to her as a safety net.

Many proclaimed Christians use God as a safety net: a “spare tire” if you will.  When life comes crashing down, it occurs to them that  they have a God who can help.  So they begin to pray.  God is much more than a spare tire.  He is and should always be our steering wheel, our guide through the good times as well as the bad.

Psalm 9:1-2

I will praise the, O Lord with all my whole heart:; I will show forth all thy marvelous works.  I will be glad and rejoice in thee.  I will sing praise to Thy name, O thou Most High.

Sometimes as a Christian we are cruising through life and we think we have a good grip on the steering wheel.  Maybe we forgot to pray or maybe we forgot to thank the Lord for all His blessings.  Whatever the case may be it is time we give the up that wheel and let Jesus take control.  Carrie Underwood says it best:

Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
‘Cause I can’t do this on my own.
So give me one more chance
And save me from this road I’m on.

The Prayer by Andrea Bocelli

I pray you’ll be our eyes
And watch us where we go
|And help us to be wise
In times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer when we lose our way
Lead us to a place|
Guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe.

Amen
